Addiction Resources
When I first attempted to write this blog, I was going to write about what addiction is, but you already KNOW. You are curious enough about it to have already googled 35 ways until Sunday what the definition is and what addiction looks like.
What is more important is HOW IT FEELS. That is what drove you to read this. And addiction sucks. Period. It doesn’t matter what you are addicted to, there isn’t a hierarchy where one is worse than another. Any addiction will eventually impact our lives the SAME way.
The want becomes a need, which becomes a compulsion. Nothing else matters until you get that “fix”, and the hormone behind this is called Dopamine. Dopamine is the hormone that drives us. It is like our hormone motivator, and it plays a part in the “high” we experience, some of us are more prone to addiction than others.
What got us here? 99.9% of the time, trauma. In some way or shape, we experienced trauma, and as a way to cope, we have chosen to use a substance, or food, or sex, or porn, or..or..or.. to help us to cope with the effects of that trauma.
Not addressing the trauma is a significant reason why it takes multiple attempts to overcome addiction. Most programs do NOT focus on the trauma and instead only focus on the addiction. That is like trying to fix a computer chip with hockey gloves on. Until the trauma is recognized, acknowledged and healing begins, relapse will most likely happen.
What makes me different? Together we will support you while you attend addiction support, but we will slowly and gently examine the trauma and work together to begin to heal it so that you can work towards success with your addiction support program. This is work. This is slow and steady progress. But, if you want this, we can do this together.
Please check out some of the Resources I have provided for you to look at. These are meant to help you dive deeper into what addiction is and how it feels and looks like.
